Who we are
Word Wise SAT is operated by Hip Wise ("we", "us", "our"). Hip Wise is the data controller for personal data processed through this service.
Personal data we collect
- Account information — email address, password (stored as a salted hash), and any display name or avatar you choose.
- Learning activity — which words you have studied, quiz answers, mastery progress, bookmarks, streaks, and study sessions.
- Purchase records — which word sets you have unlocked and the related transaction reference from our payment provider.
- Technical data — IP address, browser type, device identifiers, and basic usage logs needed to run and secure the service.
How we use your data and our legal basis
- To provide the service (contract): creating your account, saving progress, unlocking content you have purchased.
- To secure and improve the service (legitimate interests): fraud prevention, debugging, analytics on aggregate usage.
- To respond to support requests (legitimate interests).
- To meet legal obligations, such as tax and accounting records related to purchases.
Who we share data with
We share personal data only with the following categories of recipients:
- Stripe — our payment processor. Stripe handles checkout, payment processing, and applicable tax calculation. Card details are entered directly into Stripe's checkout and are never received or stored by Word Wise SAT.
- Hosting and backend providers who run our database, authentication, and serverless functions on our behalf.
- Professional advisers (such as legal and accounting advisers) where reasonably necessary.
- Authorities, where required by law.
We do not sell your personal data.
International transfers
Our service providers may process data outside your country of residence. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or adequacy decisions.
Data retention
We retain account and learning data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymise personal data within a reasonable period, except where we are required by law to keep records (for example, transaction records for tax purposes).
Your rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your personal data, and to object to certain processing. You may also withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the address on our site. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, and row-level access controls so that each account can only access its own data.
Cookies and local storage
We use the minimum cookies and browser storage required to keep you signed in and to remember session state. We do not use cross-site advertising trackers.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice as the service evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
